Charizards appeal as a dragon and one of the more rare cards certainly adds to its popularity but I think where this card gets an extra boost in value comes from the fact that Charizard appeared on the cover art of the Pokmon Red video game
Mana fixing is limited, especially outside of green, and there are no dedicated mana-fixing lands at the common level to rely on
