This spring, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to announce a national ban on menthol-flavored cigarettes and cigars with a characterizing flavor, an attempt to limit tobacco consumption, and, as a result, improve public health

The FDAs own scientific analysis concluded that menthol cigarettes increase smoking initiation and progression to regular smoking among youth and young adults, increase nicotine dependence (addiction), and reduce success in quitting, especially among Black menthol smokers

It also introduced a new product that does not contain menthol but provides a cooling sensation like menthol does

The FDA spokesperson said the agency is still working on the rule and noted that the timelines listed on the Office of Management and Budgets website are estimates and often change. Smokeless alternatives The FDAs current approach to e-cigarettes and other smokeless alternatives is also complicating the issue
