Introduction Evidence from observational studies shows that use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists is associated with various health benefits,1 including reduced risks of incident alcohol use disorder23 and incident cannabis use disorder4 and reduced frequency of healthcare encounters for tobacco use disorder.5 However, much less is known about the association between GLP-1 receptor agonists and risks of developing other substance use disorders (SUDs), such as opioid use disorder and stimulant use disorder.6 Observational studies within populations with a pre-existing SUD have also emerged suggesting that use of GLP-1 receptor agonists is associated with reduced risks of adverse events such as opioid overdose,78 alcohol intoxication,7 and risk of hospital admission for alcohol use disorder.9 While the evidence base is growing, it does not comprehensively include all common SUDs
